Bluebird “wing waving”! Wouldn’t it be great to see this?
Wing waving is a form of communication between bluebirds. It is commonly seen when a male has a box to show the female. They will both sit on the roof and “wing wave” to each other a few times. If the female approves of the house, the male will bring in a “token” pine needle or some small grasses.
One of the first things bluebird fledglings learn to do when they leave the nest is to wave their wings. It is a signal to the parents as to their location on a limb and that they are hungry. They continue the wing waving into molting and into becoming adults. [Source: Rust, Dean C. The Beloved and Charismatic Bluebird, 2016]
